It is estimated that there are over 28 million Americans who are children of alcoholics and almost half of that number are under the age of 20. Children of alcoholics (COAs) are more at risk for alcoholism and other drug abuse than children of non-alcoholics. Not only do alcoholism and other drug addictions tend to run in families, children of addicted parents often continue the cycle by marrying into families where alcoholism is prevalent. There is growing evidence that living in such families during the crucial developmental years can result in lifetime mental and physical health consequences, as well as confusion and fear in the present. NACoA has accomplished
many things by engaging the people in the fields that touch children’s
lives and have the power to change them. NACoA’s programs are
structured around educating those professionals and lay people, providing
them with training programs, products, publications and resources that
fit their needs and are easily utilized by them for effective intervention
and support of affected children. |
