Dr.
Frances L. Brisbane Receives Highest Presidential Volunteer Service Award
Washington, D.C. – Frances L. Brisbane, Ph.D., M.S.W., a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA), has been awarded the highest volunteer service award that the President of the United States can bestow, the President’s Call to Service Award. The honor was presented to Dr. Brisbane by Henry C. Lozano, Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of USA Freedom Corps, for her extraordinary and effective lifetime volunteer efforts and achievements. Dr. Brisbane is Professor and Dean of the School of Social Welfare, State University of New York at Stony Brook. She is also Dean of the Black Alcoholism and Addictions Institute, sponsored by Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta and founder of the National Black Alcoholism and Addictions Council in Washington, D. C. Dr. Brisbane’s volunteer service has spanned over 30 years, during which time she created or inspired numerous volunteer projects that have addressed the needs of children and families at the community, national, and international levels. She is co-founder of the conference, Counseling and Treating People of Colour: An International Perspective, now in its 16th year, which discusses health, mental health, substance abuse, AIDS, violence, and education across cultural lines. She is also the creator of the 100% Drug Free Clubs, an international model primary prevention program, and Project HOPE(ful), a spiritual healing and recovery program used nationally in treatment programs, churches, and spiritual retreats. In addition she is a founder and Executive Board member of the National Christian Professionals with Social Ministries, Columbus, Ohio. Among her many publications, Dr. Brisbane authored a book titled African American Children of Trauma, Children of Triumph, which she dedicated to NACoA. “During this National Volunteer Week, NACoA is especially proud to announce that this extraordinary volunteer member of our Board of Directors has received the highest volunteer honor from our nation’s President,” noted Sis Wenger, NACoA President and CEO. ### The
