Carol B. Sisco, Ph.D., Elected Board of Directors Chair

Washington, D.C. – The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) announced today that Carol B. Sisco, Ph.D., was elected Chairman of its Board of Directors.  Cleveland, OH businessman John Fedor, outgoing Chairman, commented that he was “leaving the position with great confidence about NACoA’s future because of the compassion, dedication, and superb leadership skills that are embodied in Dr. Sisco.” He added that “it is an added bonus that she lives and works in the Washington, DC area where our national office is located, especially in this 25th anniversary year with its many additional activities and programs.” Mr. Fedor will remain as an active member of the Board.

Dr. Sisco has worked as a clinician, consultant, educator, and researcher in the addictions field for over 25 years. She holds an A.B. from Duke University (magna cum laude, 1976), a M.S.W. from the University of South Carolina (1980) and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (1994).

Dr. Sisco began her social work career in 1980, working as a clinical social worker at G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital and Earle E. Morris Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center in Columbia, SC.  While at Morris Center, she helped develop the women's and family intensive treatment programs. She also served on the faculty of the South Carolina School on Alcohol and Drug Studies.

In 1986, Dr. Sisco became the Director of Outpatient Addictions Treatment Program at the George Washington University (GW) Health Plan in Washington, DC. In her capacity as an adjunct assistant professor in the GW medical school, she designed and taught an addictions primary care elective for medical students and primary care residents, as well as lectured at psychiatric grand rounds on mental health issues associated with growing up in a chemically dependent family. She also developed an outpatient program for adult children of alcoholics. Since 1984, Dr. Sisco has been a partner in Sisco Associates in Washington, DC; she became managing partner in 2000. Since 1986, Dr. Sisco has maintained a private psychotherapy practice.

Dr. Sisco has published and lectured nationally in the fields of female addiction and issues facing children of alcoholic and addictive parents.  Her master’s research, "Investigation of Self-Concept in the Female Alcoholic" was published in Resources in Education (1981) and presented at the Sixth National Institute on Social Work in Rural Areas (1983). Her doctoral research, "The Prevalence of Substance Abuse Among AFDC Recipients in Project Independence," was published in Health & Social Work (1994) and presented at the 30th and the 35th National Workshops on Welfare Research and Statistics (1990,1995) and the 8th National Conference of the American Public Welfare Association on Research, Demonstration, and Evaluation in Public Human Services (1991). These findings have been widely cited in public welfare literature and incorporated in welfare reform initiatives throughout the United States.

Dr. Sisco is a licensed clinical social worker in Maryland and Washington, DC, a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, and a National Certified Addiction Counselor. Since 2004, Dr. Sisco has been a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. She currently serves as a flotilla staff officer for membership training.
